Should I have taken my pro gear on Vacation? A professional's decision...

One of the biggest dilemmas for a Professional Photographer when traveling for a special family vacation is whether or not to take your gear.  I always go back and forth with myself, "what if I see something beautiful, unique, the girls laughing, playing on the beach, memories of our family, a print for our home" - just about anything you can think of, I have to weigh against not taking my camera.  But, how can I take all my gear and actually be on vacation? See how this can be such a difficult decision?

Well, I decided NOT to take my cameras.  I thought, this will make me relax and not think about photography. To just "be" and enjoy time with my family.  Well, that didn't last very long. Once I landed in Martha's Vineyard and smelled the fresh air, I thought, how could I have not brought my camera?  It is in my blood to capture photos, so I was a bit disappointed but I just decided to enjoy my time on vacation.  We rented a beautiful home with our family in Edgartown, which is a quaint fishing town.  There are shops and restaurants that you can walk and bike to.  It's so charming!

This dilemma posed a challenge to me - should I take my iPhone with me and just take photos like everyone else?  This freedom did allow me to enjoy the simplicity of just taking photos rather than it being my job.  It was the first time in a long time that I was relaxed behind the lens.  I didn't feel guilty that I would miss an opportunity, but I could now enjoy both; a vacation and being creative while having fun at the same time.

We also went to a local nearby farm everyday for fresh veggies and baked goods. Morning Glory Farms was amazing! You will see the photos featuring their produce, flowers, vegetables and green house.

The beach of Menemsha was incredible. Every day you pack your coolers, beach chairs and smiles! We also scored a red Jeep that made the 35 minute ride there so much fun!  The rolling hills, farms and ocean views were incredible. The water was crystal clear and bright blue - a total surprise to us! When your tummy started growling, you take a short walk to the marina where the boats deliver fresh lobster and seafood.  It was all magical.

Instead of reading a great book, I wondered around the beach town and captured photos that were inspiring to me.  This was relaxing to me, and this was such a surprise!

I hope you enjoy the photos of Martha's Vineyard taken by a professional on a cell phone!  Challenge accepted!
